Our time in Charleston
As part of the Age of Disruption Tour AARP hosts a lunch at each tour stop where Dr. Bill Thomas sits down with local disrupters. Each lunch features a discussion and the themes of disruption vary as much as the locale. We want to share the wisdom that emerged. On each city page you will find a synopsis of the voices at that lunch and have a chance to add your voice to the conversation via the comments section.
In Charleston Dr. Bill Thomas posed this question to the group:
You get one wish, you get to change one thing about aging in America what is it?
You may expect what comes next to be a series wishes for the fountain of youth in different disguises but this is not mainstream America this is the Age of Disruption. What followed were a series of thoughtful wishes ranging from; make aging sexy, make the aging experience and quality of life more equitable, becoming courageous about dying with dignity, making health about the entire lifespan and more.
The common thread that emerged was a wish not to change a ‘thing’ per se but more to change a perspective. Action follows thought and change follows action. To make all of the above wishes come true we have to start by changing the perception of aging then culture change will follow. The beautiful thing about this wish is that we don’t need anyone to do it on our behalf, no new law is required and it is absolutely free. You right now reading these words are making this wish come true! You are shifting your perspective on aging. Want to continue the journey and help change aging, join the community at changingaging.org.
